"Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."

The politics of letting tv crews film at columbia

Going to school in New York City means that it’s possible to walk around any corner and run into a television crew. And while any old tourist might witness a street closing due to “Law and Order” filming, only students at Columbia—and, okay, maybe NYU—can boast that scenes are shot on their very own campus.

But no matter how fun watching a moment in the spotlight may be for a TV-loving coed, for Columbia’s administration, TV crews on campus are more a logistical nightmare than a teenybopper fantasy realized. (Did i missed Sex in The City!!!)

By setting up strict filming restrictions, Columbia’s Office of Communications and Public Affairs tries to maintain the campus as at least one location in the city where students can study without distractions. Robert Hornsby, director of media relations, certainly takes seriously the matter of filming on campus: “Our policies for news media and filming at Columbia are designed to ensure that University events and daily activities are conducted without disruption and that the privacy of students and other members of the Columbia community is respected,” he explains in an e-mail.

And Columbia has gone out of its way to stick to its promises. While television shows with high-profile stars—like “Gossip Girl,” HBO’s “Bored To Death,” and upcoming drama “The Wonderful Maladys,” starring Sarah Michelle Geller—have recently been filmed on campus or in the immediate area, all filming has been efficient and unpublicized. “Gossip Girl,” in a move now famous around campus, shot their “Yale visits” episode here in August of last year—much earlier than they would have otherwise—in order to avoid causing a distraction for incoming students.

As a policy statement on the Communications office’s Web site reads, “Cameras are not allowed inside auditoriums, cafeterias, classrooms, corridors, dormitories, gymnasiums, laboratories, libraries, lobbies, residential halls, theaters, the Lerner Hall student center and other interior spaces unless permission is granted."

But no matter how bureaucratic the process, there’s no denying the rewards that come from opening Columbia to film and TV crews. Although the Office of Communications and Public Affairs declined to comment on the amount of money Columbia annually receives from allowing film crews on campus, there’s no doubt that the school profits—even after rejecting requests from most “commercial entities.” Given our economic times, the incentive to ditch student tranquility for extra cash seems higher than ever. If filming serves as an unwelcome intrusion of the commercial world lurking right outside our gates, is the monetary gain the filming also brings still worth it?

Still, shows like “Gossip Girl” being shot at Columbia because, “[the show] is believed to be somewhat similar to real college culture, so it isn’t totally out of place.” But the verisimilitude of “Gossip Girl” is pretty questionable. By allowing association between our school and the show, we may be giving a false representation of the average college student’s life.

Concerns over Columbia’s image becoming tainted by too many mass-market tapings are valid. After all, Butler Library is inscribed with the names of great intellectuals, not plaques that say “Blake Lively was here.” Columbia is meant to be a place that promotes intellectual culture, not shallow commercialism.

Then again, the possibility of gaining money and bragging rights makes embracing filming on campus awfully tempting. As long as we remember why we’re here, we can take pride in seeing the beauty of our campus as a backdrop—and we can respect the decisions of administrators who know better than we do how fast our endowment is shrinking.

And I have to admit, I’ll always get a kick out of re-watching that one episode of “Gossip Girl” and knowing that Dan is being hazed by some fictitious secret society on a spot where I ate lunch last week.

I will be leaving New York as of tomorrow, going to Israel as plan.

A day at a conference

This is my 4th trip to Antwerp, the 1st and the 3rd was for a holiday. The 2nd trip was for a business and as of today, my 4th visit is purely an academic purposes "presenting a key notes in a two days conference on advanced technology".

Above picture is a view of Antwerp's new central railway station after its restoration, September 25, 2009. The station was expanded with a shopping center and two lower-level platforms as part of an upgrade to accommodate high-speed trains.

Sexy Ideas for Educators

I've always enjoyed Common Craft videos and few months ago, they've created a new business model in which educators (and others) can purchase a high quality versions of the videos and either post them on the web or download for use in classroom or training room.

Seems like a great business model for making quick, short but educational videos available to explain complicated or difficult concepts and to set expectations for a training session. Great use of simple media to get across complex ideas.

Here is sample explaining the increasingly popular Twitter (available on YouTube).

So check these out and see if a Common Craft video might be something you want to add to your training toolkit.

Bullying Survey : Where not to work?

The recent results of a study by the University and Colleges Union (UCU) reveals the fact that Kingston University scored more than twice the national average in terms of the level of bullying of staff, with 15.9% of staff reporting that they were either 'always' or 'often' subjected to bullying.

and the rest is history...

Medicine or Exercises ?

I am a very healthy person, with exception in 2008 i was diagnosed with Heart Failure. I watch what I consume, and try my hardest to have a very balanced diet. I do not consume beef, and I only eat organic foods. I run like a bitch for less than 20 miles per week, and then two other days a week I do a weird assortment of cardie at the gym. Either cycle, elliptical, and or the treadmill, on the occasion I might joint a palates ...

However these last few weeks after Raya and fasting month of Ramadhan and during summer holiday, I have done none of the above. I have been so stressed, and I have not ran and I am eating like a cow or worst.

Surprise ! It has made me feel better, however I am reaping the benefits as of today. I truly have not looked into the mirror, until last night and I did not like what I saw(Steve is giggling at me, geram aku). Staring back at me was this chubby little fat guy. I know I am not fat, but I do not like this. I have developed love handles, my abs are shot all to hell, and well as for my pecks they are now hidden under a layer of fat, only one layer please!!!.

I just got back from the gym, and I weighed myself. I thought the damage was 5-6 pounds, but hell no it's more on the lines of 10-12. I am hoping some of this is false weight, and also some of it I believe is solid waste. Due to the fasting I am constipated for the first time in my entire life (hei! it was summer, what can i do?). I am going to start back on my regular eating habits, and cut about 300 calories a day off. I will then go to the gym 5 days a week, 3 days I will run 6 miles(trying my best), and the other two will or three days will be an assortment of cycle, and elliptical...

It's odd having my entire body thrown out of wack. This morning at the gym I ran 2 miles, but I was so stiff and achy. And lets not even discuss the cycle, shall we not...

The above pic is medicine called Terfamex (only available in South America, similar to Cardispan or Avesil it helps you with your false weight! NOT CHEAPER. But i love to have my ideal weight 132 pounds so i looks every inch appealing to my hubby!!!. Don't ya!

My First Sabbatical

Next month, by God willing! i will be doing my first sabbatical under the provision of IBM and Columbia University Fellowship. The Board has agreed to send me to The IBM Haifa Research Lab which is located in University of Haifa, Israel.

Godzilla! i will be going to Israel and stay for first one month. Wonder why for only one month? The Israel government issued a temporary visa and not a 1 years visa because i am Muslim or to be exact American Muslim. With my family background from Malaysia, they are afraid that i might have a connection with terrorists.BASTARD!

It is so clear, during the visa's interview. The officers had all queries on personal basis and non-related-to-my-research-purposes. but i keep cool and not to over react, understanding that is what SB or special Branch do -provocation-, i recall these from my father.

Ok, but looking from the good sight, i will be able to used their machines. Especially the MPI(Message Passing Interface) from IBM Haifa. Its was told that, the best Turing Machine is based in Haifa. I will be able to test my Mathematical Theory of Quantum Cryptography with that machine. Can wait for it.

I have several (infects so many) mathematical theories that i would like to test on that machine likes, Parallel/Grid Computing, Laser Technology on Quantum Processing, Cryptography for Cloud Computing and many more.

The Entire sabbatical is for 1 year period and the project is for 2 years and i am able taking in 2 new PhD students to help me(of course with PERKS, likes PhD scholarship, monthly allowances, visitation/traveling, special project and continue postdoctoral with IBM after PhD) with the testing and TA. Anybody have interest in Mathematical Theorem for Computer Science fields. You may email me for further clarification.

Quote For The Day

"We're sorry, you deserved so much better."

-- Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologizing for the inhumane treatment given Alan Turing - considered by many to be a father of modern computing - during World War II. The mathematician helped crack Nazi Germany's Enigma encryption machine which is often considered a major turning point for the Allies. But when it was discovered that had engaged in "gross indecency" with another man, they revoked his security clearance and gave him one of two options: jail time or the injection of female hormones. Alan Turing committed suicide two years later by eating an apple laced with cyanide. He was 41.

Economic Recovery Underway in Expenses of The Poors

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said last Tuesday that the recession is "very likely over," offering his most explicit endorsement so far of the view, increasingly widespread among economists, that a recovery is underway.

Even as he warned that the expansion could prove deary (in statistic, we called these WEAK DATA), new data released on Tuesday provided evidence that the economy was turning around, showing that Americans returned to stores in August and increased their spending at the highest rate in three years.

Certainly peoples will turn out to the stores for basic necessity likes food, health care products, cloth and anything necessary. Its said that "retail sales rose a solid 0.7 percent" and for what? the entire america! that's not the indication that the recession is over or near to over!

You don't have to have an economic degree to calculate those. Lets compare the real data in august'08, it 0.5 percent and in august'07 it was 10.5% and the year before that is >25% spending on retail sales for the entire america.

I'm very much doubt on the fact on spending patents throughout america! its all seems mystery to me. The fact is i've been doing a research in primary area in New York. Located in the Harlem and Bronx! these 2 area are massive with people, unsecured home and under development. What i can tell more on these 2 areas is in my reports which presented in MIT during Country Economics Colloquium between Academician and White House Representative Officer in-charge.

My bloody speech begin with,
(you know why! i am the one started all these in Babson: read previous post)

"The poor and 100 million who are struggling for the middle class actually end up paying more for transportation, for housing, for health care, for mortgages. They get steered to sub prime lending. . . . The poor pay more for things middle-class America takes for granted." The real situation mainly focuses on FOOD:

Transportation : You don't have a car to get to a supermarket, much less to Costco or Trader Joe's, where the middle class goes to save money. You don't have three hours to take the bus. So you buy groceries at the corner store, where a gallon of milk costs an extra dollar.

Price Planning & Control :Prices in urban corner stores are almost always higher And sometimes, prices in supermarkets in poorer neighborhoods are higher. Many of these stores charge more because the cost of doing business in some neighborhoods is higher.

They are probably paying more on goods because they don't get the low wholesale price that bigger stores get.

Rental of Building :The real estate is higher. The fact that volume is low means fewer sales per worker. They make fewer dollars of revenue per square foot of space. They don't end up making more money. Government should come out with plan of Secure Low Rental like the one they did after world war two.

The House Representative have tagged their Eyes Ball with my slide, than i continue

According to the Census Bureau, more than 37 million people in the country live below the poverty line. The poor know these facts of life. These facts become their lives. They nodded!

When you are poor, you substitute time for money. You have to work a lot of hours and still not make a lot of money. You get squeezed, and your money is squeezed. They laughed! (bastard)

The rich have direct deposit for their paychecks. The poor have check-cashing and payday loan joints, which cost time and money.

"As you've seen with the financial services industry, if people can cut a profit, they do it," The poor pay more for financial services. A lot of people who are 'unbanked' pay $3 for a money order to pay their electric bill. They pay a 2 percent check-cashing fee because they don't have bank services.

The reasons? Part of it is lack of education. But part of it is because people target them. There is evidence that credit-card mills have recently started trolling for the poor. They are targeting the recently bankrupt."

Its during the recession period that the Bankers and the Riches play their CSR (corporate Service Responsibility) by offset these extra charges! and the Government should support all these by giving an access to leverage their yearly taxes!
The Representatives are taking notes! for the reason i am not sure (i have my full proposal given to them a week before! by hand)

"There are social costs of being poor, though it is not clear where the cause and effect is. We know for a fact that on certain measures, people who are poor are often more depressed than people who are not.

I don't know if poverty made them depressed or the depression made them poor. I think the cause and effect is an open question. Some people are so depressed they are not functional. 'I live in a crummy neighborhood. My kids go to a crummy school.' That is not the kind of scenario that would make them happy."

These are partly my speech on that day! after given half and hour with Q and A. I have the proposal in full 5 pages and few appendixes from my research.

USA economy is very unique! i feel guilty if the good systems cannot help to boost the economic and get out from the recession period. There are equally good and bad people in this country. But again, i don't wanna be too vocal and find deeply involves or i will end up with trouble" that's what my university president told me!

Eid al-Fitr

Its 6th days more before we celebrate the Big Day or we called Eid al-Fitr. In which, marks the end of the month of Ramadan, the month of fasting. The word Fitr means "to break" which symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period and of all evil doing.

To marks such awaiting celebration are assorted preparation ranging from foods to cloths, different type of savories(sweet/biscuit/baklava) and i can't sure what else in the lists.

Working and staying abroad certainly bring emotional disturbance and stressful situation whenever the big day come. I missed my family and friends. But I've got my students and Mr Husband aka Steve! and baby Sophie. Lucky me!

ok! the thought of writing this post has made me sober. Don't wanna spoil that mood. Let see the pic, these has just arrived! Thanks sis, i love you! its more than enuff.

International Literacy Day

The United Nations has declared September 8th International Literacy Day. According to the folks there who keep track of such things, some 774,000,000 adults around the world lack minimal literacy skills. That's roughly 18% of the world's adults.

While scholars debate over just what constitutes minimal literacy, we'll turn our attention to what people agree on: the magic and power of reading.

More than 2,000 years ago, the Chinese philosopher Confucius warned: "No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance."

In more modern times, the Indian nationalist Mohandas Gandhi pointed out another value of reading: "You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them."

Other modern leaders have viewed literacy as a powerful force for all sorts of good. American president Lyndon B Johnson called "A book . . . the most effective weapon against intolerance and ignorance" while British Prime Minister Gordon Brown described "reading . . . [as] a ladder out of poverty . . . probably one of the best anti-poverty, anti-deprivation, anti-crime, anti-vandalism policies you can think of."

And another American president, Bill Clinton, thought the policy aspects of literacy were worth spelling out. "Literacy is not a luxury"; he said; "it is a right and a responsibility."

Very Polite New Yorkers & Purell

Yesterday, while standing on Broadway and squirting a dollop of Purell into my left palm from a tiny bottle of the potion in my right hand, I was approached from behind by two young men (late teens to early 20’s) who softly asked “Excuse me Mr, could you spare some Purell?” From their speech patterns I was under the strong impression that they were NOT of the Columbia academic community.

Had I thought that they were, the episode wouldn’t have been memorable. But because I believed they were not…I was extremely impressed and in fact flattered to be asked by these polite New Yorkers! “Of course, why of course… certainly…” I said as I unleashed copious quantities into their open hands.

Two week back in NYC and I already had what I put in my diary as “a Frasier Crane (the famous psychologist) moment but instead of cinnamon in a coffee house, i dealt with sterilizing agent on a big NYC street”. Funny huh!

Malay Heritage-Baju Melayu

I would like to introduce part of the Malay Heritage to the world. As for today i would discuss on Baju Melayu.

Baju Melayu is a traditional Malay outfit for men. It literally translates as 'Malay shirt' and consists of two main parts.

The first being the baju (long sleeved shirt) itself which has a raised stiff collar known as the cekak musang collar (literally fox's lease).

The second part is the trousers. The two parts are made out of the same type of fabric which is usually silk, cotton, or a mixture of polyester and cotton.

A skirt-type adornment is also commonly worn with the Baju Melayu, which is either the "kain samping", made out of songket cloth or the kain sarung, made out of cotton or a polyester mix. Both are loops of fabric which are folded around the wearer's waist.

A jet-black or dark colored headgear called the songkok can also worn to complete the attire.

Malay shirt can be wear any time and day.

Happy Holiday- Happy Labor Day

In the United States, Labor Day is always celebrated on the first Monday in September.

The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary.

By 1893, more than half the states were observing a “Labor Day” on one day or another, and Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

Who Are We Celebrating?

Nearly 155.1 million number of people aged 16 and older in the nation’s labor force in May 2009. Are they happy? nope! cozz U.S. Civilian Unemployment Rate Forecast is at 9.4 % and increasing by every month.

Americans work in a variety of occupations. Here is a sampling:

7.7 million number of workers who hold down more than one job (like Steve). So-called moonlighters comprise 5 percent of the working population. Of these, 4 million work full time at their primary job and part time at their other job.

28 % of workers aged 16 and older who work more than 40 hours a week. Eight percent work 60 or more hours a week. Yeah! we worked like a dog.

5.7 million,The number of people who work at home.(like Steve)

Look like it going to be long weekend and night barbecue instead!

Malaysian 52 Independence Day

I would like to wish Happy 52 birthday to much celebrated country "Malaysia". A round applause to all Malaysia for the 52 years of independence. The country have better looks than before.(according to my little memories living in Malaysia, aged 1-5 and 21-22 and 26-28 total=10 years)

As for now i am a citizen of United State of America.I have no regret whatsoever for surrender my Malaysia passport last year. I can't bear with 2 identity (bleak) and i don't wanna be known as permanent resident (PR) in USA.So, good bye Malaysian passport.

Talking about Independence day, it would no complete with glamorous parade. This year i heard the parade is done modestly, cozz it fall on fasting month. The boring parade can be made glamorous if ...(my naughty minds)we do like the above. huhuhu.WOW!
