The mathematician helped crack Nazi Germany's Enigma encryption machine which is often considered a major turning point for the Allies. But when it was discovered that had engaged in "gross indecency" with another man, they revoked his security clearance and gave him one of two options: jail time or the injection of female hormones. Alan Turing committed suicide two years later by eating an apple laced with cyanide. He was 41.
