"Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."

A day at a conference
This is my 4th trip to Antwerp, the 1st and the 3rd was for a holiday. The 2nd trip was for a business and as of today, my 4th visit is purely an academic purposes "presenting a key notes in a two days conference on advanced technology".
Above picture is a view of Antwerp's new central railway station after its restoration, September 25, 2009. The station was expanded with a shopping center and two lower-level platforms as part of an upgrade to accommodate high-speed trains.

At the risk of upsetting some people, I have to say that it's nice to see that at last they've done something about a place which was so very dark and really rather nasty as Antwerp station used to be - not to say disfunctional.
Used to change there, sometimes, on my way between Merseyside in England and Amsterdam for dirty weekends, in the days when I worked for the railway in the UK and could get free and reduced rate travel.
Although it was that bitch Margaret Thatcher who had privatised 'Sealink' (the UK railway's shipping service) so leaving only Dover-Ostend (run by Belgium State Railways) as the only sea crossing on which we could still get cheap travel.
Hence the round-about route and my intermittent acquaintanceship with Antwerp railway station!
Hope your conference went even better than you had good reason to hope!
